It was the first shortwave radio used by NATO, replacing the SCR-284 and SCR-694 sets from World War II. It is not a transceiver, the transmitter and receiver are built in separate modules and must be set up separately
It was used from the late 1940s to the 1970s in Western armed forces and equipped by the United States, even as a reserve until the early 1990s, and still, in the 2010s, by radio amateurs all over the world
It was produced in the United States and under license in France by TRT (Télécommunications radioélectriques et téléphone, a subsidiary of Philips which negotiated the production of 3,000 AN/GRC-9 transceivers in 1953 (the first offshore contract for the US Army)and Jupiter, in West Germany by Telefunken and in Italy by Elmer SpA
